Deontay Wilder returned to the ring with another blistering knockout. With ten seconds left in the first round, The Bronze Bomber detonated a vicious right hand that sent Robert Helenius down and out.
A cagey opener exploded into life as Wilder caught The Nordic Nightmare as he backed up against the ropes. The American generated a huge amount of power from an extremely short backhand with very little wind-up — a reminder of the danger that Wilder poses.
After 12 months out of the ring and consecutive knockout losses to Tyson Fury, fans were unsure what to expect from Wilder as he made his return to the squared circle. Inspired by a bronze statue of himself erected in his native Tuscaloosa, Wilder vowed to return for the people’s entertainment and entertain them he did.
Back at his natural weight of 215lb, Wilder looked light and agile as he forced Helenius to continually overextend with his blistering footowork.
Then, bang! As he was backed up into the corner, he caught his advancing foe with a perfectly timed shot to close out the show. Taking to the mic after the fight, an extremely emotional Wilder spoke from the heart: “First I’d like to thank God man, tonight he gave me the victory. It’s amazing to be back in Brooklyn, this arena is like a second home to me. Brooklynnnn! What’s up baby?
“It just feels so good to be back baby, when I came off the plane and set my foot on the ground I felt great energy. I felt the love, I felt the support and that’s all I needed. So when I stepped in the ring I felt the same thing and I knew it was going to be a great night.
