Tyson Fury was 14 stone, aged 14 – and 6ft 4 giant was banned from junior boxing
Tyson Fury's boxing career got off to a rocky start during his teenage years because he was was made to wait two years before being able to face off against an opponent for the first time.
The young prospect joined forced with former amateur coach Steve Egan at the age of 14, but was not able to get into the ring properly until his 16th birthday.
Egan has now explained that the future heavyweight champion was simply too big to be put into a ring with his peers, and not able to fight in older age groups.
That forced both Fury and his coach to sit tight and wait until he was old enough to face bigger competition, but it was unlikely that though would ever find anyone quite his size.
Egan told SunSport this week: "He came in 6ft4in, 14 stones when he first came into our gym age 14 in 2002.
"One day I turned to my dad and I said, 'He’s going to be the heavyweight champion of the world'.
Adding: "He didn’t fight in the Juniors because he was too big. He was too big for his age, so I couldn’t get him any fights till he was 16."
Egan says that Fury was 6ft4in tall and 14 stone in weight when they first crossed paths in the gym – he stands 6ft 9in and just under 20 stone at the age of 33.
