One of Tyson Fury’s sparring partners for the Deontay Wilder trilogy fight has expressed concern over the form of the British World Heavyweight Champion’s form in training. Michael Hunter, himself a heavyweight contender, has discussed being unimpressed by Fury’s preparations and unsure about the validity of the Covid-19 claim which postponed the fight, which had been due to take place on July 24.

In an interview with FightHype.com, Hunter spoke candidly about his experiences inside the Fury camp. He said: “He wasn’t doing too well in the gym.”

Hunter’s comments will no doubt fuel the fire with regards to Wilder’s opinion that Fury pulled out because he wasn’t ready as opposed to contracting Covid-19. The ‘Bronze Bomber’ has previously posted such theories via his Instagram account, recently saying: “Say it ain’t so. Not the Covid-19 lie. They’re going to hell for that one. Oct. 9th cannot come any faster.”

Hunter was unwilling to go as far as Wilder and describe Fury’s claims as lies, but still cast doubt over their veracity. When asked about the matter, Hunter said: “He wasn’t doing too well in the gym but not enough to call the fight off.

“To me, it was kind of funny because the first day they said somebody on his team got Covid-19 and then the next thing we heard was Tyson got Covid-19 so I thought it was a little fishy.”

Fury currently holds the upper hand in the series of fights against Wilder and is considered by many boxing experts to be the best heavyweight boxer in the world. The last time the two men fought, he handed Wilder the only defeat of his professional career.

That fight ended in a seventh round stoppage in February 2020 before the Covid-19 pandemic hit, in a fight which the Englishman dominated from start to finish. In their first bout in December 2018 Fury had outboxed Wilder for much of the fight before being caught flush by a left hook in the final round, which the ‘Gypsy King’ somehow survived as the epic was ruled a draw by the judges.

In response to Wilder’s claims that he lied about getting Covid-19, Fury tweeted a picture of Wilder and launched an x-rated outburst of his own.

Fury’s post read: “This man is a real piece of work.

“A really bully excuse maker. Not a warrior or man at all. Beat the mug 2 times.

“I’ve battered him and his trainer. But still talking s***. Real p******.”

Fury had been set to fight Anthony Joshua on August 14 in what would have been one of the biggest British heavyweight fights ever. However, Fury was ordered by a US court to fight Wilder after the American had long claimed that Fury was contractually obliged to face him in a rematch.
