Tyson Fury may get chance to make Joshua look worse with fight plan
Anthony Joshua says Fury clash is fight ‘boxing world needs’
Tyson Fury could be set to make Anthony Joshua look worse by fighting AJ’s nemesis Andy Ruiz in his next fight. The Gypsy King has been linked with several bouts for the remainder of 2023, including an all-British heavyweight showdown with Joshua.
However, Fury’s promoter Bob Arum has hinted that the former unified heavyweight champion Ruiz could be lined up for the 32-year-old. It would be a major blow for Joshua to see Fury defeat the Mexican.
That is because Ruiz stunned the Watford-born star to win his WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO titles in 2019. Of course, Joshua did then win them back six months later.
But Arum has dented Joshua’s ambitions of fighting Fury by hinting at a fight with Ruiz. “Maybe it’ll be Andy Ruiz [who faces Fury] or somebody like that,” he told Cornerman Boxing.

Fury has remained relatively quiet recently as speculation mounts over who he might fight next. Arum explained that he has been on holiday with his family but will return to prepare for a major bout in the summer. The promoter added: “He’s [Fury] been in Italy on vacation with his family. He’s back in England, and we’re talking to him, and we’re looking for the best available guy for him to fight this summer in the UK.”
It comes after Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn revealed he had received a ‘surprise’ phone call from Arum over the possibility of Joshua fighting Fury. Hearn told iFL TV: “Bob Arum phoned me the other day, which was quite a surprise. Just talking about AJ-Fury, he said ‘What are you thinking?’ And I said ‘I don’t know.”
He continued: We’re all up for discussing the fight. I don’t think there will be a significant site fee in July, but we’re still willing to look at the numbers.

“Or if you want to wait and do it later in the year, we’re up for that too. Who knows what’s going to happen with Usyk, with [Deontay] Wilder.”
Joshua has also been linked with Wilder and admitted recently: “It will happen and I think it’s been long overdue. It’s a conversation that’s been happening for a long, long time. So for me to sit here and say, ‘It’s going to happen, it’s going to happen’, it will feel like I’m just waffling again.
“And when it does it does. And it will. That’s just me, certifying it. I don’t need to sit here and talk about it and go on and on and on. I’ve been in that realm before where we spoke about it and it didn’t materialise. So, when it materialises it will happen and I’m confident in it.”
