Tommy Fury may NEVER come back from failing to fight Jake Paul
Tommy Fury’s failure to fight Jake Paul is one he may NEVER come back from… the Love Island star has been embarrassed by the YouTuber without even getting in the ring – now retirement could be on the cards after damaging his family name
- Tommy Fury’s grudge match against YouTuber Jake Paul has been canned
- The Love Island star was barred from entering the US and Paul has moved on
- Paul has humiliated Fury without putting gloves on with stinging online taunts
- Fury may never recover from failing to fight Paul after his image was damaged
- His own family said they would ‘retire’ him if he failed to knock out the American
The problem with a professional boxer fighting a YouTuber is that you have to beat him – or suffer a lifetime of humiliation. For Tommy Fury, his failure to even get in the ring with Jake Paul could dish up the same punishment.
Whether it’s Fury’s fault or not, having back-to-back fights against the American cancelled due to his own misfortunes is a terrible look and one he may struggle to get back up from.
Ever since the former Love Island star withdrew from their first bout in December with a broken rib, he has been at the mercy of Paul – who has teased and picked on him like a school bully.

For the brother of the heavyweight champion of the world, it’s been embarrassing and he can’t run away from it. Every slip up, every move he makes has been pounced on by Paul and used to push his face in the dirt while boosting his own image. And there’s nothing Fury can do about it.
His only way to shut Paul up was to knock him out in the ring and that opportunity is gone now – surely forever – after the 22-year-old was denied entry to the United States amid his family’s links to wanted man Daniel Kinahan.
But then again, Paul loves sticking the boot in to Fury and tearing him down, so perhaps he will entertain another showdown in the future – even if it just gives him a chance to get one over him again.
Fury – dubbed ‘Tommy Fumbles’ by his sworn enemy – is certainly losing that battle and his only response to Paul’s latest taunts has been to say that he’s ‘gutted and disappointed’ and is willing to fight him in a different country on neutral grounds.
Fury may never recover from this episode after the contest was scarpped for a second time
‘I’m gutted and disappointed in regards to the issues I have faced with entry into the USA,’ he said on social media.
‘This is something that myself or my team could have never anticipated happening. This situation has been left with my lawyers as being denied entry to a country is obviously a very serious issue and it needs to be subsequently resolved.
‘I am confident this fight will happen when this issue gets resolved and we come to a solution. I want to clarify that I will fight in a neutral country that both parties can enter. This can be any time, any place, any where.’
But Paul has moved on, accusing Fury of ‘going into hiding’, and he is now set to take on Hasim Rahman Jr – the son of the heavyweight who once beat undisputed icon Lennox Lewis.
He has taken every single excuse Fury has given and ripped it to shreds, giving updates to his followers every step of the way that he had been in contact with his rival’s lawyers – but said he had showed ‘no urgency’ to visit the US embassy to get the problem resolved.
‘We have spoken to Tommy Fury’s lawyers, they’re all advising him to just go to the embassy to get his visa,’ said Paul.
‘That’s all he has to do. But Tommy is showing no urgency, he hasn’t gone yet, he’s not communicating with us on what he’s doing.
‘This is another case of Tommy Fumbles just being scared to fight me. I think that’s what this is. This is embarrassing. Go to the embassy, get your visa, stop ducking me and stop wasting my time.’
Paul has taunted Fury like a school bully and he’s beaten him without getting in the ring
Paul’s promotional company ‘Most Valuable Promotions’ then admitted they were ‘surprised’ Fury had issues getting into the country given that he was in California just the previous month and had given no indications that obtaining his VISA would be a problem.
Fury may have done everything in his power to make this fight happen and been the victim of rotten luck, but he has put himself in this position – risked his reputation and profile to be the man to put Paul on the canvas – and the American has beaten him without even putting on a pair of gloves.
And after coming out second best in the verbal jousting with Paul, he faces further humiliation at home.
His brother Tyson warned him he would retire him as a boxer and strip away the family name if he lost to the American and this latest set-back will be treated like a defeat in the Fury household.
Fury was warned by dad John (L) and brother Tyson that he would be ‘retired’ from boxing and stripped of his family name if he failed to beat Paul
‘If Tommy can’t splatter Jake Paul, I’ll retire him from boxing myself. If he can’t beat Jake Paul, forget about boxing,’ the WBC champion said in October.
‘Because he’s got ambitions of being a world champion, never mind beating some YouTube guy.
‘It’s a great fight to watch, it’s a spectacle. But Tommy – his name’s Fury. If he can’t beat Jake Paul, I’ll have to change his name.’
His dad John – who trains the fighter – doubled down on that warning, saying he would not coach.
‘If he can’t beat Jake Paul I’ll retire him there and then. If it’s a close fight, Tommy’s retired. If Tommy struggles to beat him, he’s retired from boxing. He’s [Jake Paul] a YouTuber! He’s got to be knocking Jake Paul out.
Paul said he did everything he could to force Fury to visit the US embassy to solve his issue – but accused him of showing ‘no urgency’ and ‘hiding’ in his latest online assault
Fury has no obligation to be a boxer and could easily live his life as a social media influencer alongside girlfriend Molly Mae
‘I’m not gonna train somebody I’ve got no faith in so I’ve told him, unless you knock him out pal forget me with the boxing. I’ll walk away.’
So, what next for Fury? When Sportsmail spoke to him in April, he said he harboured dreams of winning a world title. That appears to be a pipe dream for now when a YouTuber is running rings around him and damaging his reputation.
Indeed, if Tyson and John are serious about retiring him if he doesn’t beat Paul then he may have no future in the ring, because talks about a future fight don’t look likely to commence any time soon.
Fury has said Paul needs him more than he needs the American, but you do have to ask where he goes next now that this grudge match has been called off.
Yes, he can continue to fight on Frank Warren’s cards against relatively unknown fighters and he can keep training with Tyson and his dad – but the Paul fight was a chance to make a name for himself and springboard to the next level.
Fury’s fight with Paul was his ticket to the big time and until he resurrects the showdown it is difficult to say where his career will go next
Beating someone that everyone wanted to see knocked out would have won him some serious popularity points and a legion of new followers and now it is hard to see him being taken seriously – especially after his past history on ITV’s hit dating show Love Island.
Fury is a big presence on social media and doesn’t need to be a boxer to be successful in his life. He has 4.2m followers and plenty of sponsorship deals to be had along with his girlfriend Molly Mae – the face of fashion label Pretty Little Thing.
Reality TV opportunities could be his if he wanted them, though he has made it clear he is devoted to the sport of boxing and wants to carve out his own stories. Ironically, a fight against a YouTuber is his ticket to the big time.
If he wants to get his career back on track he must resurrect the fight – but that ship may have already sailed.
