Thor Bjornsson admits he ‘doubted the truth’ behind Eddie Hall injury claim
Strongman-turned-boxer Hafthor Bjornsson has admitted there was part of him which "did not really want to believe" the reason behind Eddie Hall's postponement of their hotly-anticipated boxing showdown.
The two former World's Strongest Man champions have been locked in a bitter feud since their days competing against one another, and agreed to settle their differences with a boxing match scheduled for September 18.
But, five weeks before the bout, Hall pulled out of the contest after suffering a detached bicep in training.
Bjornsson, who shot to widespread fame for his role as Gregor 'The Mountain' Clegane in hit series Game of Thrones, admitted to The Star there was part of him which did not believe the news at first.
"It was a shock – it came out of nowhere," he said.
"You don't really want to believe it in the beginning. Just like: 'Is he really injured? What happened? How did it happen?'
"You don't really believe it until you see it.
"I was super frustrated. But it was out of my hands, there's nothing I can do. I just have to keep training and hopefully March next year we will be able to fight.
"We're speaking about March, so hopefully he starts full-on training soon."
Arm wrestling champion Devon Larratt stepped in with five weeks' notice to take on Thor in Dubai on the same date the Icelander was due to take on Staffordshire strongman Hall.
Will Hafthor Bjornsson or Eddie Hall win their eventual boxing fight? Let us know in the comments section.
Bjornsson used his height and weight advantage to overpower his opponent early on, securing the win towards the end of the first round when the referee waved off the contest.
Hall mocked his would-be opponent in the aftermath, sarcastically congratulating him for "beating an old man up" in a comment on Facebook.
Despite Hall's best efforts to get under his skin, Thor brushed off the Englishman's jibe and vowed to "end this in the ring".
"A friend of mine showed me that," he said.
"He likes to talk shit behind the camera – that's what he does best. It doesn't really surprise me.
"Someone told me as well that Eddie thought Devon would knock me out. So first he thought Devon was going to beat me, and now because I've won he's going to talk some other crap.
"This is just typical Eddie. He likes to talk shit. He'll talk shit even after I beat him – he'll never stop."
Bjornsson, a Reign Total Body Fuel ambassador, continued: "[To knock him out] means everything to me. He's talking so much crap for the last how many years?
"He's shown disrespect towards my team, my family – I've had enough of that guy. I just want to end this in the ring and just move on.
"Hopefully he can forget about me, stop mentioning my name, stop talking about me and just move on."
Thor confirmed that his team had been in contact with Hall's to discuss a rescheduled date for their clash.
"We're speaking about March," he said.
"I just have to keep training and hopefully March next year we will be able to fight."
Hafthor Bjornsson is a Reign ambassador, he will fight Eddie Hall in March 2022.
