Emerging boxing superstar Ryan Garcia has sent a blunt message to Conor Benn after the British fighter failed a drugs test. Benn’s grudge bout against Chris Eubank Jr was called off after last-minute talks between BBBofC and the organisers fell through on Thursday with Promoter Eddie Hearn then confirming the postponement of the fight via an official statement on social media.
On Wednesday, the British Boxing Board of Control — who was set to sanction the fight — ‘prohibited’ the bout leading to a negotiation process between the organisers and the sanctioning body to take place in order to resolve the issue. But the BBBofC stood firm on their decision meaning the fight was cancelled.
Benn has denied and questioned the results, stating that he is a clean athlete. He said: “I am truly gutted we are unable to make this fight happen on Saturday and I am sorry to everybody who has been affected by this postponement,” he said in a statement.
“I am still shocked by this and shocked by this, and it has been a tough couple of days. My team and I will consider the next options including rescheduling the flight, but my immediate focus is on cleaning my name because I am a clean athlete!”.
But although Benn has denied that he knowingly used any banned substances, he has been roundly criticised for testing positive.
Ryan Garcia has had his say, naming Benn testing positive as a ‘disgrace’.
He said: “No mercy on cheating in sports. If you cheat you’re weak!!!! Even if you ended up still competing and did win, how can you be happy with that and proud. Disgrace. Unbelievable what’s going on in the UK.”
After the cancellation was confirmed, Hearn stated that it was postponed and they will look to make the fight happen as soon as they can.
He said: “We do believe he (Benn) has not been given due process like many others in this situation before him. I also want to clear up so many different reports from journalists and outlets about us being in the high court this afternoon, us considering other commissions – it is just not true.
“We took a decision which believe is in the best interests of Wasserman Boxing and the parties involved. This is a sport which is very dear to us, a sport we have been around our entire life, and while we were desperate for this fight to take place for the fans, the undercard fighters, we also made a decision we felt we had to at this time. Especially for the interest of the sport and British public, as well.”
