Ricky Hatton steps up boxing return with gruelling gym training session

Ricky Hatton as upped the intensity in training as he prepares to return to the ring next month.

Nearly 10 years to the day of his retirement from professional boxing, following his KO defeat to Vyacheslav Senchenko in Manchester, on November 12 'The Hitman' will face fellow legend Marco Antonio Barrera in an exhibition bout. And he's treating the clash as if he was back in his prime.

The 44-year-old was notorious for fluctuating in weight between fights, and back in 2010 underwent rehabilitation for alcohol and drug problems. However, he recently declared that 'Ricky Fatton' was gone having got himself back in shape for Barrera.

And on Monday, the former two-weight champion took to Instagram to show fans how hard he was working. The 44-year-old shared clips of himself pounding a heavy bag, cycling, performing explosive jumps over a bar and putting everything into weighted sled pushes.

He added the caption: "Followed by my own session. Tough 8 x 3s. Going through the gears now, flat out but getting second winds/recovery rate improving rapid now."

It wasn't just his 351,000 followers impressed by his new found fitness either. WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, who is currently finalising is own proposed bout with Derek Chisora, opted to share the video with his own following.

Hatton's fight with the Mexican was initially due to take place in July but was rescheduled after the main event on the card, Hughie Fury v Michael Hunter, was postponed after Fury fell ill. But the 'gutted' Man City fan was determined his comeback would not be scuppered, and immediately sought to negotiate an alternative date.

Barrera, 48, is also ending a boxing exile that spans over a decade. The multiple world champion ended his own pro career in February 2012, following a win over Jose Arias.

The 'Baby Faced Assassin' was famed for facing the best during his 75-fight span in the sport, twice losing to Manny Pacquaio. He also faced British legend Amir Kahn, and ended the unbeaten run of 'Prince' Naseem Hamed.
