Ricky Hatton ‘on the mend’ after rare disease led to gruesome scars

Ricky Hatton has revealed he is "on the mend" as he shows his progress after a disease left him with gruesome scars.

The former boxing world champion suffered from a rare tissue disease following his return to the ring back in November, which left him unable to hit a punch bag for several months. After sharing images of the injuries and scars the condition, known as Dupuytren's disease, left him with, Hatton has now posted an update on his recovery.

In a post on Twitter, he wrote: "I got Dupuytrens disease. I’ve not been able to punch or do pads for about 3 month. Been a very worrying time for me but as you can see. Well & truly on the mend."

Underneath the tweet, Hatton attached side by side images of his hand covered in scars after surgery and healed up more recently.

He also added a description of the disease, which reads: "Dupuytren's disease is a condition that affects the fascia – the fibrous layer of tissue that lies underneath the skin in the palm and fingers.

"In patients with Dupuytren's the fascia thickens, then tightens over time. This causes the fingers to be pulled inwards, towards the palm. resulting in what is known as a 'Dupuytren's contracture'.

"In some patients, a worsening Dupuytren's contracture can interfere with hand function, making it difficult for them to perform their daily activities.

"When this occurs, there are non-surgical and surgical treatment options available to help slow the progression of the disease and improve motion in the affected fingers."

Hatton had returned to the ring after a decade away from boxing back in November in an exhibition bout against fellow veteran Antonio Barrera.

Ahead of the bout, Hatton underwent an incredible body transformation in preparation for the fight, having spent his time out of the ring training fighters at his own gym in Manchester.
