Evander Holyfield has lashed out at Mike Tyson as the heavyweight veterans fail to agree on terms for a historic trilogy bout as they return to the ring in their 50’s.
Iron Mike battled to a draw against Roy Jones Jr. back in November before stating that he has every intention to carry on fighting in exhibitions, furthering Holyfield’s interest.
The 58-year-old, who beat Tyson in both 1996 and 1997, hasn’t stepped into the ring since he beat Brian Nielsen back in 2011 three years after losing to Nikolai Valuev.
Following several call-outs, he has now released a statement publicly criticising Tyson, and accused his team of making excuses to avoid a trilogy bout.
Holyfield said: “My side tried to make the fight happen and we got nothing but excuses.
“Now I can see why he wanted a tune-up fight before thinking about fighting me.
“Roy Jones was a good local opponent for Mike, but a fight with me would be a global event and the only fight that anyone wants to see is a fight between us.
“There is absolutely no reason why we shouldn’t make it happen.
“No more excuses. This is the fight that must happen for both our legacies. Sign the contract and get in the ring, Tyson. The world is waiting and it’s on you now. I’m ready.”
Holyfield had told The Sun: "Where an opportunity is available, I like to make the best out of what I have.
“I believe if I fought Mike the fight will generate $200million. It will be the biggest fight there is. That’s the honest truth. I think Mike has my message already.”

With Tyson saying after his recent bout: “We started Legends Only League and it’s really interesting.
Once I announced that I was going to do my exhibition, everybody, all these other athletes all wanted to get involved in some way.
“Our first show was a record breaker. Now everybody’s interested in being involved with our whole organisation.”
Before adding: “It was interesting. I felt really good, I felt confident. I felt that I could do it again.”
