When Chris Eubank Jr was returning to his hotel in Newcastle after a training session last week, he didn’t expect to be asked to sign a microwave. He also didn’t expect that agreeing to scribble his autograph on the item would later cost him £66,000.
After learning the microwave was up for auction Eubank Jr, 32, pledged to match the winning bid with a donation to charity.
He tweeted “Been sent a link to an eBay auction thats selling the microwave I signed in Newcastle.
“No idea how much it’ll go for but to make this a more meaningful situation whatever the winning bid is I’ll match it and give the money to a charity of the winners choice.”
His classy gesture duly prompted frenzied interest as bids suddenly ramped up, and on Thursday night the device was seemingly sold for £66,000.

The eventual price clearly took the former IBO super-middleweight title holder by surprise, as he again reacted on Twitter by posting “Well that escalated quickly.”
The tweet prompted a favourable reaction, with many fans making comparisons to the legendary George Foreman Grills, a business venture of the former heavyweight boxer.
@MarkByersVIII wrote “There’s a business opportunity here Chris? Remember George Foreman and his Grills?…Chris Eubank and his Microwaves next?”
@rhys2k1 joined in the fun with: “Chris Eubank microwave > George Foreman grill.”
Eubank Jr had trained and then attended a press conference at St James’ Park last Thursday ahead of his fight against Wanik Awdijan, and was strolling back to his accommodation when the bizarre turn of events began.
After being recognised he was mobbed by fans, and adhered to the inevitable requests for selfies.
It was then that one male fan ran up to him with a pen and a microwave, claiming it was the only thing he had for the boxer to sign.
“Only in Newcastle will you find such dedication and resourcefulness,” he said.
“The balls this kid must have to walk around the town center on a Thursday night ALONE with only a microwave to watch his back, deserves a medal for bravery.”
The incident didnt affect Eubank Jr’s focus, as he duly beat German fighter Awdijan the following Saturday to take his record to 31-2-0.
