Kell Brook insists he’s always believed himself to be a superior fighter than Amir Khan, for as long as last 17 years, after ending their bitter rivalry with a sixth-round TKO of his fellow Briton in Manchester on Saturday night. Brook declared that Khan’s superior profile and status was only because he won an Olympic medal and had the right people behind him.
The Sheffield fighter was a convincing winner at the AO Arena as he landed more power punches than Khan threw total punches, leaving Khan battered and bruised by the time the referee waved it off.
Brook told Sky Sports afterwards: “I knew that was going to happen. It was a matter of time before I was going to get him out of there. What a feeling. What a turnout.
“Those are the fights I wanted to be involved in when I walked into a gym as a kid. Them big fights, the War of the Roses, bragging rights, King of the North. I’m back on top now. I took Amir Khan out just like I said I was going to.
“It’s a weight off my chest. I put a lot of pressure on myself because I told everyone [I’d beat him] and I did believe it. I always knew from when I was 18 years old that I was a better fighter than him.
“He had the push and the promoters behind him because he won silver in the Olympics. I’ve always known that. Tonight the fans got to see a megafight and I dealt with him.”
Quizzed on the bitter nature of their rivalry, Brook declared that in their post-fight embrace in the ring, Khan offered to go to coffee with him.
He added: “I’ve always had some respect for him. It’s always kind of been there. When I don’t get it back for years it’s hard to like someone who is just dissing you.
“I take my hat off to him today for taking those shots and still trying to hold in there. That’s where the respect comes. He’s marked up and he took some good shots. I respect him for that.
“I’ve heard he’s a nice kind of guy you know. He said we can get a coffee after. If we do or not, that’s a different thing!”
‘Special K’ was bizarrely forced to change his gloves in the ring before the fight got underway – and he accused Khan’s camp of deliberately trying to unsettle him on multiple occasions.
“We knew the timing was still there. All his demands, honestly, with the contract and stuff. I even had to put different gloves on in the ring – that doesn’t happen!
“He said he wasn’t happy with my gloves. It all got past and everything but it took till the final moment in the ring and they said ‘Listen, we’re not going to pay you if you don’t put these gloves on.’
“I needed to put them gloves on. Then the weight, without getting too much into it, I done all the things they wanted me to do and I still took him apart didn’t I.
“They tried to do it all week and tried to get into my head. They tried to push and poke at me. I kept calm and listened to my corner, Dominic Ingle, and I’m back.
“I took care of business even though I had prods and pushes. I even had people knocking at my hotel door, at 3am or 4am in the morning, trying to disrupt my sleep.”
Discussing what’s next, Brook hinted he could take on Chris Eubank Jr, who was present as a spectator.
He added: “I can walk away. I want to thank Ben Shalom [the founder and CCEO of BOXXER] who was here tonight. Eubank. I don’t like Eubank, we could fight him. There’s some big fights out there for me.
“If the millions are right, I’ll fight. I’m a prize fighter at the end of the day. I’ve got three beautiful daughters who want that money off me!”
Khan meanwhile hinted he could now retire, saying: “I need to sit down with my family, but it is more towards the end of my career. The love of the sport isn’t there anymore.
“That is a sign for me that I should maybe be calling it a day. I’m very upset. I just couldn’t get it going. I have fallen a little bit short. Obviously he was the best man today.”
