‘Judges should be sacked’ moan fans as Baumgardner beats Mayer in ‘robbery’

Boxing fans have claimed Alycia Baumgardner's split decision win over Mikaela Mayer was a "fix" and the judges should be "sacked".

The unified WBC, IBF, and WBO featherweight belts were on the line at The O2 Arena on Saturday evening. And boos reigned down on the ring when it was announced Meyer had been dealt the first loss of her professional career.

However, some on social media took it even further as they suggested the bout was a fix. One fan even tweeted: "I really feel the judges in boxing should be sacked for poor scorecards."

Another fan added: "Seems woman’s boxing is as corrupt as men’s. Mayer easily won about 8 out of 10 rounds yet the judges give it to Baumgardner!"

"That is a shocking decision, no way on earth does Baumgardner win that fight, a total fix!! Mayer has every right to feel incredibly cheated," a third tweeted. A fourth said: "Mayer won about 7 rounds. It was a fix. The crowd doesn’t boo for nothing!"

And boxing bombshell Ebanie Bridges added: "Ringside here and it was a close contest, but I had Mayer winning that by 2 rounds…"

The result will only add to the already frosty relationship between the pair that boiled over at the weigh-in.

The pair had already had to be dragged apart during Sky Sports' The Face Off show, and security had to get involved again at the weigh-in. Mayer had directed a kick in the direction of the American as the pair stood face-to-face.

After the bell, Baumgardner said: "I told all the doubters, the haters. I am unified champion of the world. I hit the harder shots, the cleaner shots and cut her forehead. I was the harder puncher and I dug deep. They ain't being no rematch."
