Joshua told to make most of physicality in Usyk rematch by Reynoso

Anthony Joshua is told to make the most of his physical advantages and throw ‘better combinations’ against Oleksandr Usyk by Canelo Alvarez’s coach Eddy Reynoso… who is still hoping to train the Brit for his crucial heavyweight rematch this year

  • Anthony Joshua is set to face Oleksandr Usyk for a second time in March or April
  • Joshua suffered a conclusive defeat against the Ukrainian back in September
  • Eddy Reynoso has urged him to take advantage of his physicality in the rematch
  • Canelo Alvarez’s coach is one of several trainers AJ is considering working with

Canelo Alvarez’s trainer Eddy Reynoso has urged Anthony Joshua to make the most of his physical advantages and throw ‘better combinations’ in his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk.

Joshua suffered a unanimous points defeat when he met Usyk for the first time back in September, failing to get close to the Ukrainian over 12 rounds and losing his unified heavyweight titles in the process.

After immediately exercising his rematch clause, he recently flirted with the idea of accepting step-aside money to allow Usyk and Tyson Fury to battle it out for the undisputed crown.

Anthony Joshua must take advantage of his physicality vs Oleksandr Usyk, says Eddy Reynoso

But with Fury now set to defend his WBC strap against Dillian Whyte, Joshua is now expected to lock horns with Usyk again in late March or early April.

The Brit will have a new lead trainer in his corner for the rematch after making the decision to freshen up his team, although Rob McCracken will remain involved in some capacity.

During a recent trip to the States, AJ enjoyed some trial sessions with Reynoso – the esteemed coach best known for masterminding Canelo’s rise to the top of world boxing.

Joshua is still yet to announce his new coach for the rematch, having also visited Robert Garcia and Ronnie Shields during his tour of America.

Reynoso believes the Brit need to make the most of his physical traits in their rematch

However, Reynoso has still offered the former champion some crucial advice ahead of his pivotal second meeting with Usyk.

‘I think work his distance more, better combinations,’ the Mexican told Fight Hub TV.

‘He has a lot of good traits, a lot of good physical traits, but doesn’t take advantage of them.’

As well as Canelo, Reynoso is also training Joshua’s old adversary Andy Ruiz Jr – who delivered his first loss in June 2019.

Six months later AJ avenged that knockout defeat against the Mexican-American in Saudi Arabia, producing a highly-disciplined performance to outbox him over 12 rounds.

Despite Ruiz angling for a third fight, Reynoso is adamant that having both men in his stable could work.

‘I’m a boxing trainer and willing to work with anyone, him included,’ he continued. ‘Whoever, it’s just a thing of when the fights will be happening, and are we ready.

‘Yeah, I spoke to Joshua and [his promoter Eddie] Hearn to see what can be done and we will see what’s next.

‘No, there’s no conflict having Joshua there with Andy, they don’t both have fights, so there’s the opportunity to work with both of them.’
