Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall reignite their war of words

Josh Taylor insists he is staying at light-welterweight to rematch Jack Catterall and ‘shut everyone up’ after winning  controversial first fight… but English rival claims he is yet to receive an offer

  • Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall fought each other back in February
  • Taylor was awarded a split-decision win, but many fans saw the bout differently
  • Catterall wants an immediate rematch, and Taylor has now said he will oblige
  • However, Catterall is not convinced, and feels Taylor is actually avoiding him

Jack Catterall has hit out at Josh Taylor after his former opponent claimed that he is only staying at light-welterweight to settle the score between the British pair.

Taylor defended his world titles against Catterall in February, and was handed a split-decision victory by the judges, despite many observers feeling that the verdict should have gone the other way.

In the immediate aftermath of the fight, Taylor hinted that he could move up to welterweight after struggling to make the 10 stone limit. However, he has now had a change of heart.

Catterall called for an immediate rematch after feeling that he was robbed of victory

I want to shut everyone up. The only reason I’m staying at the weight is I want to fight Catterall again,’ Taylor told The National.

‘I don’t think it was the wrong decision [in February] but I want to shut everyone up. I want to prove that was an off night for me and that I’m one of the best fighters on the planet.

‘Because of all the stick and abuse I’ve been getting, and the way Jack’s been too, mouthing off and moaning, I just want to shut his mouth. The single reason I’m staying at the weight is to shut him and everyone else up.’

Taylor’s comments were praised online by boxing broadcaster Adam Catterall, who is no relation to Jack.

Catterall is not convinced that Taylor is genuine, though, and has said he is waiting for an offer

‘This is what real champions do. They remove all fight. Big fan of this energy. Massive fight,’ he wrote on Twitter.

However, Taylor’s rival, Catterall, was far less impressed with the Scot’s remarks.

‘Tartan Torna***hole all bark no bite. I’m still waiting for an offer…

‘I’m ready to go, I don’t believe you really want it,’ he responded on Twitter.

An immediate rematch is not due to take place as Taylor has been ordered to defend his belts against his WBC mandatory challenger Jose Zepeda.

If Taylor can come through that bout, it could set up a mouthwatering showdown with Catterall.
