Joe Joyce is backing Usyk and says winning will be 'hard for Joshua’
Joe Joyce gives an insider’s perspective on the upcoming fight and chats about what lies next for him.
The British heavyweight contender says Anthony Joshua faces a very tough night in his bid to overcome Oleksandr Usyk.
Let’s hear the full verdict…
What does AJ have to do to win the belts back?
I believe he is going to be more offensive, or try to be, and land something on Usyk – from the face-off it seems like he wants it. There could be some doubts in there. Usyk looks very confident and I think it’s going to be hard for Joshua.
My money’s on Usyk unless Joshua can get him with a lucky shot.
Was it the right call for AJ to move on from Rob McCracken to work fully under Angel Fernandez this time around?
He had already been training with him for a while so should be quite used to the stuff he’s trying to teach him and he should have had time to learn something.
Could the pressure of representing Ukraine weigh heavily on Usyk this time?
Usyk’s very switched on and seeing him in the traditional Cossack clothing at the press conference just showed how patriotic he is about his home country and this is important, maybe for morale there too.
Where does AJ go next if he loses? Would you fight him after your clash with Joseph Parker next month?
Joshua’s still a big draw so even if he loses there are plenty of fights out there for him. He could fight me potentially, or Deontay Wilder. He still sells out stadiums and people are interested in watching him.
And could you be next for Usyk, who beat you in World Series of Boxing in 2013?
It’s a tough fight but an opportunity I’d be interested in. I’d rather fight Usyk and maybe defend against Joshua at some stage.
All the belts should become available in March next year so I’ll be ready to fight for them, inherit them, after beating Parker.
You met Wilder in the UFC gym in the US. Could he be a future opponent for you?
I’d fight Deontay, especially if it’s for the WBC title. I like Deontay but it’s business, he’s got a very strong punch that I’d have to watch out for.
Have you heard anything about Joshua’s camp?
Yes, I’ve heard he’s had loads of southpaws in sparring and he’s been knocking guys out.
