Jake Paul tells Eddie Hearn he’s ‘dead serious’ about facing Canelo Alvarez
Jake Paul is very keen to fight pound-for-pound king Canelo Alvarez.
The American wants to make his dream of becoming world champion a reality and has the Mexican firmly in his sights.
Alvarez is the WBC, WBO and WBA super middleweight champion and Plant's IBF super middleweight title holder and has lost just one fight in his professional career, which boasts 57 wins.
Paul has made a promising start to life as a boxer, as he has yet to lose any of his five professional fights and has defeated the likes of former NBA stars, YouTubers and MMA champions.
In an interview with talkSPORT alongside promoter Eddie Hearn, Paul insisted he is “dead serious” about clashing with the middleweight champion and pocketing a fee in the region of $50m-$75m (£37m-£55.5m).
The 24-year-old also made an audacious claim that boxers are easier to compete against than MMA fighters.
How would you rate Jake Paul's chance against Canelo Alvarez? Let us know in the comments section.
Hearn said: “That’s no disrespect to Jake, you can’t just turn to boxing and become a world champion. He will try to prove us wrong.”
To which Paul responded: “I think boxers are easier to fight than MMA fighters. They are more predictable and don’t hit as hard and they can’t take as big of a punch.”
Hearn disagreed and replied: “I would disagree about not punching so hard.
“Partly with you, I don’t know if you’re serious or not. Like with fighting Canelo Alvarez.”
The confident American thinks he has what it takes to go against one of the world’s best fighters once he has more experience under his belt.
“I’m being dead serious. On my mum’s life I’m being serious,” he said boldly. “That I can contend with him, three years from now.”
Hearn then teased: "Maybe I’ll promote it.”
Paul added: "And walk away with $50m-$75m. I’ve seen guys go in there against him, and I say it all the time, the one guy recently goes three rounds and quits in the corner and doesn’t throw a punch [Avni Yildirim].
“How much did he get paid? I have way more heart than that guy. I’m way more athletic than that guy.”
Paul was referring to Alvarez’s fight with his mandatory challenger at the time, Avni Yıldırım, whose corner threw in the towel at the end of the third round after a dominant performance from the champion.
Hearn respects Paul’s ambition and drive to reach the top of the boxing world, but with many stiff challenges ahead of him, he is unsure if he will be able to achieve his dream.
“I don’t think so, but he likes proving people wrong.” Hearn said.
