Jake Paul on facing Tyron Woodley again, future as a boxer: ‘I could become the next Muhammad Ali’
With three knockouts already in his boxing career, Jake Paul is feeling ambitious going into his rematch vs. Tyron Woodley.
After working out in Tampa, Fla., on Wednesday, the undefeated Paul (4-0, three KOs) shared his feelings about Saturday’s fight and his plans for the future. He compared his journey in boxing to that of a certain world-famous Olympic gold medalist and three-time heavyweight champion.
“What does [Woodley] have here? He has nothing.” Paul told reporters in response to a question about why he feels more pressure than Woodley going into this fight. “I’m 24 years old. I could take over the world, I could become the next Muhammad Ali at the rate this is going. What does he have? He has nothing. I have a much bigger story here, much greater presence, and I’m doing something that no one’s ever done before.”
Paul spent his open workout jumping rope in the ring and then went for a quick swim.
During his media availability afterward, he felt confident enough to predict when Woodley would lose.
“I’m 110 percent confident,” Paul said. “I think it happens inside of five rounds. Last fight, it was easy to tee off on him. But for some reason, I stopped punching after my combinations. This time you will see me keep punching. That’s going to get him out of there.”
The former YouTube sensation, otherwise known as “The Problem Child,” earned his most recent win with a split decision over Woodley in August. He was scheduled to face Tommy Fury next, but Fury pulled out of the fight Dec. 6 because of a medical issue. Woodley answered the call and got a rematch, which will take place at Amalie Arena in Tampa.
Paul also had some comments about the judging in the first fight vs. Woodley. He told the media that he isn’t planning on leaving the outcome of the rematch to the scorecards.
“I’m not going to leave it up to the judges. Last time, the last judge, the one who scored it for Woodley, who knows what fight he was looking at? He needs to see an eye doctor. I’m not leaving it up to the judges this time.” Paul said.
The scores for the eight-round fight were 78-74 for Paul, 77-75 for Paul and 77-75 for Woodley.
