'It screams excuses' – Conor Benn reacts to Chris Eubank Jr's KFC stunt
Conor Benn has dismissed Chris Eubank Jr’s recent KFC stunt, insisting the move ‘screams excuses.’
Benn and Eubank Jr will follow in their fathers’ footsteps and meet in the ring on 8 October.
Eubank Jr, who has campaigned at middleweight and super-middleweight throughout his career, will have to make a career low weight of 157lbs after a catchweight was agreed.
The 32-year-old admitted last month he hasn’t hit the scales at 157lbs since he was 18-years-old – but showed no concerns as he was seen casually munching away at a KFC bucket at the KSI vs Swarmz fight on 20 August.
Benn was left unperturbed by the stunt as he focuses on his own preparation but did suggest it could be used as another excuse should he emerge victorious at the O2 Arena.
‘It’s all for show, isn’t it? It’s good promotion, fair play to him. I hope he got paid from it – he needs to start counting his pennies,’ Benn told IFL TV.
‘I don’t really look into stuff like that if you’re asking me. Maybe the public thinks he’s taking it easy, maybe the public don’t and they think he’s training hard. But again, it makes no difference to me because I’ll still prepare the same.
‘He can do what he wants, if that’s his way of beating me or playing mental games then let him do that. if that what he feels he needs to do to have the edge,
‘To me, it screams excuses. Why would you not want to show a true dedicated athlete? Why would you not want to show elite standards, elite performance, elite behaviour? That’s down to him.’
Benn’s trainer Tony Sims meanwhile has suggested Eubank Jr will have no choice but to walk away from the sport if he is handed a devastating loss in the capital.
‘Conor Benn could send Chris Eubank Jr into retirement, but it depends on how the fight pans out,’ Sims said. ‘If it’s a great fight the fans will probably call for a return whatever way it goes.
‘If Chris wins in a dull fight, maybe the fans won’t call it out, it just depends on what way the fight goes.
‘If Conor Benn knocks Chris Eubank Jr out early then obviously he has to retire, so it just depends on how the whole fight pans out before you can speak about retirement.’
