Hearn would not be 'surprised' if Fury fought Haye to avoid Joshua

Eddie Hearn says he would not be ‘surprised’ if Tyson Fury fought David Haye and chased ‘decent money’ to avoid facing Anthony Joshua in a unification bout… after the Gypsy King was called out by the veteran

  • Tyson Fury is gearing up to face Deontay Wilder in their trilogy bout next month
  • There are hopes Fury will then turn his attentions to a scrap with Anthony Joshua
  • But Eddie Hearn believes the Gypsy King may take up another fight to avoid AJ
  • David Haye called out Fury and said he was his ‘kryptonite’ after making a return

Eddie Hearn says he would not be surprised if Tyson Fury accepts the surprise call-out from David Haye in an attempt to avoid fighting Anthony Joshua.

World champion Fury, who is gearing up to face Deontay Wilder in their trilogy bout next month, was challenged by veteran Haye, who made his return to the ring by beating Joe Fournier via unanimous decision.

Fury hasn’t confirmed whether he will take up Haye’s call to arms yet, but Matchroom Boxing chief Hearn has said he may chase the ‘decent money’ instead and duck out of taking on Joshua in a Battle of Britain clash.

‘I wouldn’t even be surprised if Tyson Fury does it,’ Hearn told iFL TV.

‘Because it would be a way for him to avoid Anthony Joshua, it would probably make some decent money.

‘Some people are about that life and some people aren’t.’

Frank Warren has admitted that a clash between Fury and Haye would be ‘huge’, but also insisted that the heavyweight titan’s focus is fully on Joshua.

A bullish Haye labelled himself as Fury’s ‘kryptonite’, and also said his potential opponent was a ‘big fat dosser’.

‘I know how to beat Tyson Fury, I really do,’ Haye said. ‘I’m being deadly serious.

‘I understand why he’s so effective and no-one else can see it. I’m good enough still to do it. I would have done it back in 2013. He knows it.’

Fury was initially set to fight Joshua in a mouth-watering Saudi Arabia bout, but an arbitrator later ruled that he would have to face Wilder for a third time.

Fury’s next fight comes against his rival Deontay Wilder in their trilogy showdown next month

After that, Joshua’s highly-anticipated showdown with Fury may reportedly be finally pencilled in for next year, according to reports.

The Gypsy King himself has cast doubt over whether it will take place at all, however.

‘I was never optimistic about AJ happening,’ Fury said. ‘This was always going on in the background and they knew all that.

‘Eddie Hearn knew it, Joshua knew it – they all knew it. All of a sudden, it’s my fault because I’m a s***house, please.’

He continued: ‘I don’t think the fight will happen. We’ve been trying to do this fight since we were 22 years old and I’m now 33.’

Despite this, the Evening Standard claimed that, should both fighters win their next bouts, talks about what promises to be one of the greatest scraps in the history of the sport could intensify – and it may be worth £200million.

Hearn was left angered after the showpiece fell through, and said of Fury: ‘He’s someone who pulls out of fights, even with the Wilder situation happening.

‘We’ll see him sometime soon. When everybody’s ready, we’ll be here waiting.’
