Gennadiy Golovkin has insisted he won't retire despite losing his trilogy fight to Canelo Alvarez.

Triple G, now 40, was looking to exact revenge on Canelo, eight years his junior, who earned a controversial draw against him in 2017 and then won an equally disputed decision the following year.

But the Kazakh showed his age as he was dominated over the 12 rounds in Las Vegas last night (September 17), with the judges scoring it 116-112, 115-113, 115-113 for his Mexican opponent.

It was widely expected amongthe boxing community that Golovkin would hang up his gloves with a professional record of 42-2-1 after losing the bout for the undisputed super-middleweight titles.

But he wants to return to the ring to defend his IBF, IBO and WBA (Super) middleweight belts. Speaking post-fight, he said: "Remember guys, I still have belts at 160. I'll come back guys. I'm still champion guys.

"I still have this fire burning within me, I have this passion for boxing, I still feel great. I didn’t [take] any serious shots. I’m not tired, I’m fresh. I feel the strength and power within me.

"If the opportunity comes, I’ll be looking to continue in the ring. It will all depend on offers I might receive. I have belts at 160, like I said, and certain obligations with that."

Golovkin had never fought at 168lbs before in his career and the step up in weight, combined with being in his twilight years, proved to be too much of a challenge against Canelo, who has handed him both of his two career defeats.

He showed class afterwards nonetheless, adding: "I want to shake hands with Canelo. Congrats to all his team. He's a real warrior, if you don't understand that, you don't understand nothing."
