Fury vs Joshua fight is spectacle we need as polar opposites go head-to-head
As I waited for our overdue baby to decide when it wanted to enter the world, I searched for inspiration from… literally anywhere.
Something that might have given the baby a jolt would have been the announcement of the heavily rumoured agreement that Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury will finally fight in June this year.
This fight will be the biggest fight in British boxing history by a country mile. Regardless of the fact that it won’t be in front of 90,000 fans at Wembley, the worldwide interest on this fight will be record breaking.
Whenever there is a fight for the undisputed heavyweight title of the world there is always huge interest, but there is more to it with this fight.
Joshua and Fury couldn’t be any more different as people and athletes, and that captures people’s interest in a way few match-ups can.
Each man seems almost the exact opposite of each other which sparks that fascinating question of which is better. There is the body beautiful Joshua versus the more fat-carrying Fury raising that question whether the more everyday man’s body can beat a machine-like body.
There is the technical genius and ring knowhow of Fury versus the raw power but less skilled Joshua asking us whether a man can truly survive the danger of a massive knockout because he is a better boxer.
There is the polished brand of Joshua versus the unfiltered roughness of Fury that challenges our perception of what we truly want our ‘champion’ to act like.
There is the openness of Fury to the mental health issues he has faced and the privacy that Joshua holds for his life that makes us think about what is the mindset that a champion needs to have.
There is Joshua’s background of growing up at an amateur boxing club versus Fury’s gypsy boxing upbringing that gets us to wonder which is better.
There are huge differences between these two men all over the place and that is incredibly unusual in sport.
At the start of the 100m Olympic final, there are relatively small differences between the sprinters.
As we lined up for our Olympic hockey final versus the Netherlands, the differences between the two teams were marginal. Even in boxing, it is incredibly rare to see this many big differences between the two fighters.
We have to presume that both fighters will be as well prepared for this fight as they have ever been. There will be nothing bigger for each of them than fighting each other.
Ever since Fury came back on to the scene in the big way, there have been arguments between keen and casual boxing fans all over the world over who wins out of these two. There will be a rematch whatever happens, but this fight will finally answer all the questions this match-up raises.
This is not to be missed.
