Floyd Mayweather opponent drank own urine in preparation for 2009 bout
Mexican boxing star Juan Manuel Marquez drank his own urine ahead of his 2009 clash with Floyd Mayweather.
Mayweather returned from a two-year hiatus to take on Marquez in Las Vegas in a welterweight bout that generated 1m pay-per-view buys.
The fight was not for a title given Mayweather’s inaction and the weight differences though Marquez ensured he was prepared for the bout.
And some may say he took his training a step too far as the Mexican, who was a world champion in four weight classes, admitting he drank his own urine.
“This is something I have been doing for the past six or seven fights, and it has given me good results,” he said ahead of the clash.
“If you drink or inject yourself with vitamins, you release them every time you go to the bathroom. Why not put them back in your body orally?”
It didn’t help on this occasion with Mayweather in control throughout, knocking Marquez down in the second and cutting his opponent in the fourth round.
Money earned a unanimous decision from the judges though Marquez bounced back in 2010 to retain his lightweight titles against Juan Diaz.
Though Mayweather said he was given a tough time against Marquez, saying: "He was a great little big man. I threw a hell of a shot that dropped him, and then he got back up and kept fighting. He's a tough guy.
"I've been off for almost two years but it felt really good to be back. I was happy with the victory but I know I can get better.”
Though Marquez changed his urine drinking tactics as he prepared to take on Manny Pacquiao in 2011.

"On the advice of my doctor and my physical trainer Angel (Hernandez), they told us we should stop," Marquez said.
"We're looking for what can help me, and if the doctor says no longer drinking it will help, then we'll stop."
