Dillian Whyte tells Anthony Joshua he’s not welcome at Wembley for Fury clash
Dillian Whyte is aiming to finally become world champion when he takes on Tyson Fury at Wembley on Saturday – but he doesn't want Anthony Joshua there to see it.
After years of feuding, Whyte, 34, can fulfil a lifelong ambition when he takes on 'The Gypsy King' in front of a 90,000 plus sell-out crowd. The fight has been dubbed one of the biggest in the history of British boxing, despite 'The Body Snatcher' refusing to embrace much of the build-up due to his discontent over the purse split.
The winner of the bout is likely to face whoever prevails in the rematch of the Oleksandr Usyk v Anthony Joshua fight, in a mouth-watering unification clash. That's despite Fury, 33, claiming his fight with Whyte will be his last.
Whyte beat Joshua in 2009 during their amateur days, but six years later, was KO'd by 'AJ' at pro-level in a bout for the then vacant British title. Now Joshua, 32, has backed his old foe to win at Wembley, but only because he wants to 'smash' him later down the line.
However, the Brixton man has urged the Olympic gold medalist to stay away from Wembley, and instead focus on getting his WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight belts back: "I don’t want AJ at my fight. He needs to fight Usyk and focus on that," said Whyte, via The Sun.
"In the build-up to the last Usyk fight he was too worried about re-matching me and telling people he wanted to beat me up. I wanted to shout out ‘bro, leave me alone and focus on Usyk’. And then look what happened, he got in the fight and looked spaced out, clueless."
Should 'AJ' stay away from Wembley and focus instead on fighting Usyk? Let us know in the comments section.
And Whyte also implied that a second defeat to the Ukrainian would end Joshua's career. The rematch has been provisionally scheduled for July 23, with Saudi Arabia thought to be favoured venue.
"He needs to focus on what he has to do, he needs to forget becoming undisputed and worry about Usyk, because if he doesn’t beat Usyk then where does he go? I don’t want Anthony Joshua to retire because I want to fight him again.”
Fury meanwhile, has dismissed the prospect of him facing Joshua irrespective of how he fares on Saturday: “I couldn’t give one flying hoot or sniff about that body builder, no interest," he said this week.
