Deontay Wilder should stop posting weightlifting videos and focus on Tyson Fury
I have some bad news for Deontay Wilder, a 310lb [141kg] bench press is not very good.
Our assistant coach Josh Pritchard used to box at featherweight. He benches 330lb [150kg] for reps.
I’m 60 and do sets of 10 with 90kg [198lbs]. I’m no longer a featherweight but the point is made.
Struggling with the help of two spotters to press 310 once then posting a video in which you threaten to run over Tyson Fury like a train is a bad psychological ploy.
Besides, if you are trying to put the fear of god into your opponent, not only is the poundage lousy, it would not help him in the fight were it mighty.
They said Sugar Ray Robinson could barely bench 100 pounds, yet he had little difficulty getting opponents out of the ring, 63 percent of his 174 wins coming by KO.
Knockout power is not just about raw physical strength. It’s about speed and timing. Robinson had skill, the precision of a Swiss watch and feet that moved like a dancer.
Fury might not look like an athlete but he moves better than Wilder and has a huge weight advantage.
Wilder can’t out muscle Fury. He has to throw his weight around in a meaningful way, which means doing something different this time.
Wilder’s power comes from the combination of reach and speed. When he times a shot with that reach the opponent is going over, just as Fury did in the first fight.
The problem is he doesn’t throw enough punches. Fury knows that and in the second bout walked him down to take away his advantage.
What’s more Wilder allowed it. To have any chance of beating Fury he has to let go from the beginning, make it a fire fight, a slugging match.
He needs to walk out, get the jab off and throw in bunches, threes and fours. Benching won’t help with that, especially at those weights.
All this macho signalling plays straight into the hands of Fury.
Wilder can’t win a propaganda war against a bloke who loves the banter and thrives on slagging matches.
My train beats your truck, baby, signals to Fury that he has Wilder rattled, which is just where he wants him.
Wilder opted for silence at the face-off to announce the fight. That is a better option for him, and with just three weeks until fight night, he should quit with the videos.
