Gervonta Davis was arrested on Tuesday evening and is awaiting a bond hearing on an alleged domestic abuse incident eleven days before his upcoming contest with Hector Luis Garcia. The undefeated American boxer was placed under arrest on one count of battery causing bodily harm according to Broward County (Florida) inmate records.
Davis remains in custody at Broward County’s Main Jail Bureau in Fort Lauderdale and is set to appear for his first hearing on Wednesday. Where the alleged incident took place and the party or parties involved have yet to be disclosed.
Davis is also set to appear in Baltimore Circuit Court on February 16 for his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run incident back in November 2020. He is facing 14 charges including failure to immediately return and remain at the scene involving bodily injury. This incident has no relation to his most recent charge.
The 28-year-old is scheduled to defend his WBA (regular) strap against former WBA super featherweight titlist Garcia on January 7 at the Capital One Arena in Washington D.C. The fight is to serve as a tune-up contest for his long-awaited showdown with fierce rival Ryan Garcia on April 15.
After two years of trading verbal jabs online, both men have agreed to face each other in Las Vegas next year. Last month Garcia announced that the fight was signed while Davis confirmed that it was a “done deal” online.
“I’m so pumped this fight is finally in place I want it more than anything right now,” Garcia tweeted. “I’ve put in the work, I’m at the prime of my career, and I know I’m going to be the biggest boxer in the world. That legacy starts today.”

Garcia’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions affirmed the importance of the clash in a statement shared by his company: “The fans have been crystal clear that the fight they want is Ryan versus Tank. Golden Boy Promotions and I are proud to be leading the drive to get this fight signed and are excited to get a deal finalized ASAP.
“It’s high time that those outside the ring stop getting in the way of those who want nothing more than to get into the ring and fight. Our motto has always been that the fans come first, and this is just another example of how we’re leading by example.”
Exactly what effect Davis’ latest charge will have on both of his upcoming fights will become clearer in the next few days.
