Conor McGregor has theory as to why Deontay Wilder lost to Tyson Fury
UFC star Conor McGregor has an interesting theory as to why Deontay Wilder lost to Tyson Fury on Saturday night.
The Bronze Bomber was looking for revenge following the knockout defeat he suffered to the Gypsy King when they last fought back in February 2020, but instead was stopped for the second time in 20 months.
Fury ended things in the eleventh round of a pulsating contest having knocked his opponent down on more than one occasion during the bout.
The Brit enjoyed a significant weight advantage over the American despite Wilder weighing in heavier than ever – and McGregor says that huge disparity was a major factor in the outcome of the fight.
Fury weighed in at 19st 11lb (277lbs) while Wilder tipped the scales at 17st (238lb) – half a stone heavier than he was for his first defeat to the Morecambe-based brawler in February last year.
"Great fight that, both warriors, both winners," the Irishman wrote on Twitter. "Hard to not be impressed with Deontay there; against the much larger man and almost got it done.
"Great fight [but] 40lb in weight difference is A LOT. Fair play both men there, very enjoyable fights they have had together. Respect.
"Their skill levels are unique but very close. A great heavyweight trilogy that was. I love when it gets set for certain and both have an honourable showing.

"Not the fam in the ring fake celebrating after a freak injury etc etc you know the gig, God bless the real in this world.
"Congrats Tyson and Paris. Me and Dee are so happy for you and the kids. Congrats Deontay and Telli also. Was great meeting you guys recently.
"A real proud showing that was, and could have went either way. Amazing! Happy Sunday now today with the cheddar and the memory’s God bless."
Wilder admitted afterwards that the weight difference was an issue.
Fury used his giant frame to impose himself physically on the home fighter and eventually wore him down as the bout reached its closing stages.
"I did my best, but it wasn’t good enough tonight. I know that in training he did certain things, and I also knew that he didn’t come in at 277 pounds to be a ballet dancer," said Wilder.
"He came to lean on me, try to rough me up and he succeeded."
Up next for Fury will most likely be Dillian Whyte, who was confirmed as the mandatory challenger to the WBC-belt holder last week though Whyte first faces his own bout against Otto Wallin at the end of the month.
