Conor Benn fight prohibited over fertility drug used to boost testosterone
Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn's upcoming fight was one of the most highly anticipated matches on the boxing calendar this year, but fans will now have to wait to see the rivals go head-to-head.
Eubank Jr and Benn were supposed to settle a long-running family feud on October 8 in a match taking place 30 years on from the iconic Old Trafford match between their boxing legend fathers, Chris Eubank Sr and Nigel Benn, which ended in a draw.
But as excitement for Saturday's match was building, the event was thrown into doubt as the British Boxing Board of Control made the shocking announcement that it would not sanction the fight and had chosen to prohibit it from going ahead.
After a day of uncertainty it was announced on October 6 that the fight had been officially postponed.
Promoter Matchroom said: "After discussions with various parties, we have taken the decision to formally postpone the bout between Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn."
Here's why Saturday's match isn't going ahead anymore.
Why has Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn been postponed?
The Chris Eubank Jr vs Connor Benn match, which was due to take place on Saturday October 8, has been postponed after Benn failed a drug test.
The boxer's promoters said that he returned "adverse analytical finding for trace amounts of a fertility drug".
Following the test results, the British Boxing Board of Control announced that the fight had been "prohibited" because it was "not in the interests of boxing" for it to go ahead.
Despite the announcement, Benn's promoter Eddie Hearn insisted that the match could still go ahead and that talks were ongoing, but it was later announced that the fight would be postponed.
Responding to the BBBoC's decision, Matchroom said: "It is undeniable that the British Boxing Board of Control's decision to withdraw their sanctioning was procedurally flawed and without due process.
"That remains a legal issue between the promoters and the Board which we intend to pursue."
What did Conor Benn test positive for?
The fertility drug that Conor Benn tested positive for was called clomiphene, which boosts testosterone.
Clomiphene is a medication that is commonly used to treat infertility in women as it stimulates the increase in the hormones that support the growth and release of a mature egg.
When taken by men, clomiphene increases levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and LH encourages the release of testosterone in males.
