Chris Eubank Sr urges fans to boycott son’s fight v Conor Benn over weight fears

Chris Eubank Sr has urged fans to boycott his son's fight with Conor Benn due to concerns about his weight.

The pair are set to meet in the boxing ring at the O2 Arena on Saturday night, reigniting their fathers' intense rivalry from the early 1990s. However, Eubank Sr has been critical of the bout, which will be fought at a catchweight of 157lbs, and threatened to pull his son out of the fight last month.

Now he has told fight fans to boycott the bout in a text message sent to boxing promoter Spencer Fearon as fight week gets underway.

Fearon revealed the message on his The Fight is Right podcast, explaining: “I get a phone call – because I said recently, ‘Don’t be surprised if Conor Benn actually wins this fight.’ So I get a phone call from the father [Eubank Sr].

“First, he was in the papers about two weeks ago saying, ‘I’ve already lost one son, I don’t want to lose another.’ I realised the seriousness of this when he’s talking about the hatred that Nigel had for him when they were fighting…

“This is what Eubank has said, this is Eubank’s statement, it’s a very simple statement. He said, ‘Dear Spencer, boycott the fight. You know what 3lbs beneath the middleweight limit at 33 years old can do, this is how brain injuries occur.'”

The plea to boycott the fight comes after Eubank Sr had threatened to pull his son out of the contest last month. He was quoted stating: “We have to be strict otherwise lives are put in danger and my son’s life cannot be put in danger. I’ve already lost one. It can’t happen again.”

Eubank Sr fought Benn's father Nigel twice during the early 1990s, with their intense rivalry one of the biggest in British boxing history.

Their first bout in November 1990 saw Eubank Sr win via a ninth round technical knockout before their rematch three years later ended in a draw.
