Chris Eubank Sr looked extremely relieved when he was told the news that his son’s fight with Conor Benn had been postponed following Benn’s failed drugs test.
The British boxing legend repeatedly campaigned for fans to boycott the fight over concerns for his son’s health due to the contest’s 157lb catchweight limit. Eubank Jr has never fought below 160lb as a professional and with all the known risks of excessive weight cutting, Eubank Sr refused to give his blessing to the contest.
Now, the fight has been called off after Benn returned adverse findings for the banned substance clomifene in a drugs test carried out by VADA. Eubank Sr’s reaction was caught on camera during a FaceTime call with Spencer Fearon.
Teasing a full interview with Eubank Sr, Fearon dropped the clip of them talking to his Instagram story. Fearon began: “So have you heard the news that your son’s fight’s been cancelled?”
Eubank Sr replied: “I don’t really listen to the news.”
At which point Fearon interrupted and said: “It’s been cancelled sir. It’s been cancelled, so when you put out the statement that you wanted it to be boycotted, it’s now cancelled, so it seems your words carry weight and power.”
Eubank Sr reacted: “Well I’m only speaking what the people – what any father would speak.”
