Chris Eubank Jnr has taunted Billy Joe Saunders, claiming he now represents his bitter rival’s ‘best friend’, as their war of words re-ignites ahead of possible rematch this year.

‘I’m the only thing he has left in the sport of boxing,’ Eubank said of Saunders, who has not fought since having his orbital bone fractured by Canelo Alvarez last May.

Saunders compared Eubank’s boxing to a ‘baby giraffe’ following Junior’s victory over Liam Williams last week. But the 32-year-old is open to a second fight, nearly eight years after he beat Eubank via a tight split decision.

Junior is targeting a world title at middleweight but No 1 targets Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin and Ryota Murata are slated to meet this spring, while TV deals mean a historic clash with Conor Benn – reviving their fathers’ classic rivalry – would be difficult. Even before you consider their two-division weight gap.

Eubank is also open to fighting the winner of next week’s grudge match between Amir Khan and Kell Brook but Saunders, who has previously demanded £5million for a rematch, would be an obvious fit.

‘The fight will happen, it’s just when, where and how. Everything will be on my terms, he has nothing to offer,’ Eubank told Sportsmail.

‘I’m the only name that people are interested in him fighting… I’m his best friend in boxing right now, he has no one else.’

The 32-year-old added: ‘It’s not for me to reach out to them. I’ve got a long list of huge fights that could be made for me over the next six to 12 months so he’s not a priority.

‘I understand the public want to see the fight, I do obviously have this history with him… I want to avenge the loss that he was gifted. The fight will happen but when I’m ready.’

Benn Jnr revealed this week that his team have already spoken to Eubank’s handlers. Their fathers, Nigel and Chris Snr, shared two of the biggest fights in British boxing history and Eubank Jnr said: ‘If the fight can be made at a realistic time, place and weight, then who am I to deny the fans such an amazing fight?

‘That’s a fight that’s probably never ever been done in the history of boxing – two sons whose (fathers) are two legendary fighters who’ve had their own rivalry… so obviously it’s a fight I’d entertain if it can be made. That’s the question.’

It’s not an easy one to answer, given Benn is being groomed as a future superstar of Matchroom and DAZN, while Eubank is a key tenet of Sky Sports’ new era. Benn would also need to climb up from welterweight.

‘Let’s not get it twisted here, this is a massive money fight for him. The biggest fight he could ever have,’ Eubank said. ‘So if you want the cheddar you’ve got to pay the price… this fight is for the fans, that’s it. It’s not about anything else. It’s about capturing the imagination of the public.’

Eubank is currently nursing a hand injury following his points win over Williams in Cardiff, when he dished out four knockdowns but spent much of the second half showboating.

After scans revealed only bad ligament damage, Eubank will take a couple of weeks off before discussing his next move with promoter Kalle Sauerland.
