Canelo vows to replicate Billy Joe Saunders pain and damage on Caleb Plant

Canelo Alvarez believes Billy Joe Saunders got what he deserved when he left him with a broken eye socket – and warned Caleb Plant will suffer a similar fate this weekend.

The Mexican boxing superstar takes on American Plant for the undisputed super-middleweight crown at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Alvarez, 31, broke Saunders’ face with a brutal right uppercut when they met back in May.

The pound-for-pound ace appeared to enjoy dishing out punishment to the Brit who had goaded him in a fiery build-up.

Unbeaten IBF champion Plant has also angered the Mexican by bringing up his drug test failure and punches were thrown at the announcement press conference back in September.

Alvarez now plans to punish Plant just like he did Saunders.

He said: “I enjoyed it so much, so much. I enjoyed it so much, he [Saunders] deserved it.”

When asked if he wants to do the same to Plant, Canelo added: “Yeah, I’m going to enjoy it a lot, just watch.”

Alvarez has become a lot more menacing since he started speaking English and his words are not toned down through a translator.

It seems bizarre that rivals now think the best way to unsettle him is to antagonise him.

Saunders found out it was not a good tactic, that’s for sure. Now Plant will suffer the same on Saturday.

WBC, WBO and WBA champion Alvarez has only lost once in 58 fights, a 2013 defeat by Floyd Mayweather, and has ruled in four weight divisions from light-middleweight up to light-heavyweight.

The only other blemish on his record is a drugs ban between his first meeting with Gennady Golovkin and their second clash.

But he is still widely considered the best fighter on the planet at the moment and he is certainly the biggest attraction.

Premier Boxing Champions and Showtime have paid him close to a minimum of £30m for tonight’s clash with Plant.

That figure could rise if pay-per-view sales in America go well for the fight that will crown the first ever undisputed super-middleweight champion.

Alvarez wants to fight “four to five” times next year as he looks to leave a legacy to be remembered for a long time in the sport.

He comes from a country blessed with boxing royalty but one day wants to be remembered as the best from his land.

“One of my favourite fighters in Mexico was Gilberto Roman and Julio Cesar Chavez for sure,” he added.

“Will I be the greatest from Mexico? We’ll see. I’m just happy to make my own history and we’ll see at the end of my career.

“But I would love to be one of the best for sure.”
