Canelo Alvarez has sent a message of congratulations to the Argentina national football team after they lifted the World Cup on Sunday night. The former pound-for-pound king found himself in a war of words with multiple former team-mates of Lionel Messi after he threatened the Argentina captain for what he perceived as ‘cleaning the floor with a Mexico football shirt’.
Canelo warned Messi to hope he “doesn’t find him” as a video emerged of the football icon appearing to brush a Mexico shirt with his boot following Argentina’s 2-0 World Cup group stage win over the undisputed super middleweight champion’s home country.
After receiving a backlash for his comments, Canelo sent an apology to Messi and has since gone on to praise Argentina following their victory over France in the World Cup final on penalties. Taking to Twitter, he wrote: “Congratulations Argentina, they deserved it.”
Canelo’s original message wasn’t so kind. “Did you guys see Messi cleaning the floor with our jersey and flag,” he tweeted.
“He better pray to God that I don’t find him. Just like I respect Argentina, he has to respect Mexico! I’m not talking about the country as a whole, just about the bulls**t that Messi did.”
Rushing to Messi’s defence Argentina legend, Sergio Aguero fired back: “Mr. Canelo, don’t look for excuses or problems, surely you don’t know about soccer and what happens in a locker room. The shirts are always on the floor after the games are over due to sweat and then if you see well, he makes the movement to remove the booty and accidentally hits it.”
To which, Canelo responded: “You b****** too… you wrote to me oh oh Canelo and now sucking don’t be a hypocrite b******.”
Aguero retorted: “I admired you Mr. Canelo. But what he did today with Messi was a low blow. And you know better than anyone that this is unfair. Disqualified.”
Aguero wasn’t alone in defending Messi, ex-Barca colleague Cesc Fabregas also chimed in with a similar tweet: “You neither know the person, nor do you understand how a dressing room works or what happens after a game.
“ALL t-shirts, even the ones we wear ourselves, go on the floor and are washed afterwards. And more when you celebrate an important victory.”
But after sitting on it for a few days, Canelo sent an apology to Messi and the people of Argentina. “These last few days I got carried away by the passion and love I feel for my country and made comments that were out of place for which I want to apologise to Messi and the people of Argentina,” he wrote.
