Canelo Alvarez warned Oleksandr Usyk is "too big" for Mexican superstar
Canelo Alvarez has been told by ring legend Roy Jones Jr that fighting Oleksandr Usyk would be a mistake.
Talks of a fight between pound-for-pound No.1 Alvarez and Usyk have come after the Mexican outlined his plans to fight at cruiserweight next.
The undisputed super middleweight champion Alvarez – who knocked out Caleb Plant in November – is set to face WBC titleholder Ilunga Makabu at 200lbs.
Usyk won the undisputed cruiserweight titles in 2018 and defended them once before moving up to heavyweight.
The Ukrainian fought for the heavyweight titles in just his third fight at the weight class, outpointing Anthony Joshua in London to win the unified belts.
But Jones thinks Usyk would have no problem against Alvarez due to the size difference between them.
“Usyk beats Canelo easy, in my opinion but Uysk is the heavyweight champion of the world, Jones told iFL TV.
"Why would you go down to cruiserweight when you’re the heavyweight champion of the world? Remember when Chad Dawson went down from light heavyweight to fight Andre Ward at 168. That was the end of his career.
“Why would you go back down to cruiserweight to fight Alvarez when you have Tyson Furys, Deontay Wilders, Anthony Joshuas?
"You’ve got so many big guys in the weight class that you are champion at right now that it makes no sense unless you’re making way more money.”
If the pair were to fight, Alvarez – who is 5'7" – would have a huge size disadvantage against Usyk, who stands at 6'3".
Usyk admitted he would only drop to cruiserweight to fight Alvarez if he was guaranteed to not be stripped of his heavyweight titles.
"Yes, I can fight him at cruiserweight. But with only one thing – I keep my belts at heavyweight," Usyk told Boxing Insider.

"Then I go back to cruiserweight and fight him and then I come back to heavyweight."
And Jones think Usyk should only use a fight with Alvarez as a negotiating tool for other heavyweight matchups.
"You vs Fury right now is probably one of the biggest fights on the planet, you vs Joshua again is also a big fight," he continued.
"Now if you want to use that fight [vs Alvarez] for a negotiating tool, that makes sense because if they not paying you enough to rematch Joshua and you getting double to fight Canelo, then you right.
"But if not, why would you sacrifice a gamble on a chance of getting beat because you lost the weight, when all you got to do is stay where you're at and dominate?"
