Canelo Alvaraz open to crazy Oleksandr Usyk fight after watching Joshua clash

Undisputed super-middleweight world champion Canelo Alvaraz is open to the crazy challenge of facing Oleksandr Usyk despite watching the Ukrainian beat Anthony Joshua for a second time.

Alvaraz suffered a second career defeat when stepping up to light-heavyweight against Dmitry Bivol in May and many fear a further step up in weight to cruiserweight would be too far, but the Mexican is up for the fight.

“It’s difficult, but I don’t care. I like that kind of challenge," said Alvaraz when jokingly asked about a rumoured fight against Usyk. “It’s gonna be difficult, I know, but I love boxing. I love being in that kind of situation.”

First, Usyk is more likely to face Tyson Fury in a unification heavyweight fight while Alvarez is preparing to defend his super-middleweight titles against Gennady Golovkin next month.

Usyk was asked in April if he would take on Alvaraz and the heavyweight said he would on one condition. "If he wants to box with me at cruiserweight, then I can go down there," he said.

“But on condition that I still have my heavyweight belts because I’ll go back there later.”

However, Alvaraz's defeat on points against Bivol after moving up to light-heavyweight (175lbs) has made many think that meeting Usyk at cruiserweight (200lbs) will be a step too far for the super-middleweight (168lbs) champion. Despite this theory the Mexican seems confident that he would be up for the challenge.

Alvarez, who has 53 wins and two defeats to his name, suffered his first professional defeat against Floyd Mayweather Jr aged 23. Now aged 35 he puts that defeat down to experience.

"I needed more experience, more mature. I don’t take that fight like a loss, I learned from that fight," he said talking to the ‘Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson’ podcast.
