A ringside camera was showered with blood after a boxer’s ear “exploded” during a fierce bout.

Fernando Martinez retained his IBF super-featherweight title after stopping Jade Bornea in the 11th round. The early stages were relatively tight with both fighters landing impressive blows on one another.

However, Borneo’s ear began to swell in the early rounds and continually got worse as the fight went on. Once Martinez spotted the frailty, he proceeded to target it at every opportunity.

Eventually, the Filipino fighter’s ear appeared to explode after taking one punch too many from Martinez.

Gruesome injuries and boxing go hand in glove. However, the nature of Bornea’s exploding ear is particularly unique. In the final round, some of the blood leaking from his ear flew out of the ring and onto the lens of a camera.

Blood stained camera lenses is something you would expect to see on a Mortal Kombat game when your character takes a pounding from the opponent. The camera operators would have been very relieved when they called time on the contest, otherwise a bigger clean-up job may have been required.

As you would expect, Martinez was anything but apologetic when he retained his championship. "I just kept going at the ear and that's what ended this fight," the Argentine champion said after the bout. "The stronger fighter won and it was me," he added.

“I definitely saw the injury in the ear. The inflammation was like nothing I’ve ever seen before. I hit him with a left and it popped, exploded.

“I even told the referee ‘be cautious. I think he’s really hurt’. That’s when I just kept going at the ear and trying to finish this fight. I kept on going for blood like a shark on a mission.”

If those comments are anything to go by, it was certainly mission accomplished.
