Tom Saunders, father of super-middleweight fighter Billy Joe, was seen pushed to the floor by security as he attempted to get to the ring following his son’s defeat to Canelo Alvarez.

Saunders was looking to protect his unbeaten professional record but saw his corner pull him out of the bout in the eighth round.

His right eye was closed and the 31-year-old had suffered multiple fractures of the orbital bone, leading to concern from his camp in the immediate aftermath.

Saunders Snr climbed over a railing in a bid to get to the ring at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas to check on his son but he was met by security in new footage which emerged.

Shared by the Athletic’s Mike Coppinger, Saunders Snr is seen to be aggressively pushed to the ground by one member of the security.

Another member of Saunders’ team subsequently takes issue with the shove and a melee ensues.

WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury watched on with Saunders’ camp in Dallas and while he elected not to get involved in the melee, he did appear to be trying to diffuse the situation from behind the railing.

Canelo Alvarez said he knew Saunders was hurt by his nasty uppercut in the eighth round

Saunders’ promoter Eddie Hearn later confirmed that the super-middleweight was taken to hospital following defeat to Canelo and that he would be out of the ring for a ‘long, long time’ due to his injuries.

‘He’s gone to hospital and I believe he’ll have that operated on immediately. So he’s going to be out for a long, long time,’ Hearn said.

‘But he’s a world class fighter who lost to the pound-for-pound number one. He’s a two-weight world champion.

‘If he wants to carry on there’s some big fights out there for him. He may feel he has got to a stage where he’s been there, he’s done it, he’s seen it all. We’ll back him 100 per cent.’If he wants to carry on there’s some big fights out there for him. He may feel he has got to a stage where he’s been there, he’s done it, he’s seen it all. Canelo Alvarez quickly asserted his dominance as he landed some huge shots on the Briton

Despite Saunders making a fast start to the fight, Alvarez soon asserted his dominance and landed a series of huge shots including a brutal uppercut in round eight which caused the eye injury before the fight was stopped, with the Mexican leading 78-74, 77-75 and 78-74 on the three judges’ scorecards.

Speaking in the ring immediately after the fight, a jubilant Alvarez said: ‘I said it would be around round eight.

‘I think I broke his cheek and I knew he wasn’t going to come out.

‘I told my corner he’s not coming out because I broke his cheek. It was not as difficult as I expected and that is because of my preparation. I have the best trainer, I prepare. He says “do this” and I do it.’
