Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn is reportedly ‘near certain’ to take place this weekend as the saga continues.
According to the Daily Mail, there are currently as many as three overseas sanctioning bodies willing to approve the fight after British Boxing Board of Control ‘prohibited’ the contest following the news that Benn had failed a VADA drugs test. The news broke yesterday that The Destroyer had returned adverse analytical findings for the banned substance, clomifene.
The drug is primarily used to treat infertility in women who do not ovulate but can double as a performance enhancer as it can also increase testosterone in men when taken as a daily pill. Despite returning a clean test to UKAD — the BBBofC’s anti-doping partner — a sample A test from VADA came back with trace amounts of the drug leading the sanctioning body to refuse to allow the contest to happen under their banner.
Eubank Jr, Benn, and their promotional companies, Wasserman and Matchroom Boxing have affirmed their interest in continuing with the contest and have reportedly approached a number of different sanctioning bodies as a result.
ESPN boxing Insider Mike Coppinger reported that the Luxembourg Boxing Federation were among those who were approached — the board which stepped in to sanction the 2012 heavyweight bout between David Haye and Derek Chisora after the BBBofC refused to approve it.
But despite these suggestions, Hearn recently tweeted: “Let’s see what today brings but to make one thing clear, I will not be promoting this fight with a foreign commission or alternative governing body on Saturday night.”
