Anthony Joshua has been urged to use the same aggression he showed when he fought Dillan Whyte in his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk. This is the opinion of Tony Bellew, who claims the former Heavyweight champion needs to do some “soul-searching” to get to that place when he next steps in the ring with Ukrainian.

The 32-year-old is keen to win his titles back after losing by unanimous decision to Usyk at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Bellew, who himself fought Usyk and lost back in 2018, told DAZN Boxing: “I think there are certain things that need igniting in Anthony Joshua.

“Maybe the aggression, maybe back to what he was doing before the Dillian Whyte fight.

“That fighter is still in there, he’s gotta find a way to ignite that in himself again.”

Joshua defeated Whyte by TKO in the seventh round back in 2015, taking the fight to The Body Snatcher with his strong and assertive punches.

AJ was unable to cope with Usyk’s sharp speed and movement and the former cruiserweight made it very difficult for the Brit to land his killer right hand.

He came into the contest as the much bigger man, carrying an advantage of more than a stone in weight and three inches in height, but unfortunately for Joshua, he was unable to use it to his advantage.

Joshua sustained the second loss of his professional career, just over two years after his first came against Andy Ruiz Jr.

Many were sprurised with AJ’s to the fight, as he looked to outbox Usyk rather than aiming to be on the front foot and try to knock his opponent out.

One of the critics was Carl Froch, who blasted Joshua for ‘poncing around’ at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last month.

Froch also advised AJ to axe anyone that is still ‘hanging around’ in his camp.

He said: “Now, if you’ve got height and reach and weight advantage on somebody that’s better than you technically, it’s a no-brainer.

“F*****g get on him, ragdoll him, push him back, lean on him, hit him round the body, hit him low, f*****g drop the nut on him if you have to.

“Get the win, don’t sit back, poncing around, flicking the jab out and just waiting and that’s what it was.

“Disappointing performance for AJ, one he can massively improve on, quite easily.

“So you can’t write him off in the rematch but he needs to change his tactics.”

The defeat in September scuppers any hopes Joshua had of finally landing his much anticipated bout with Tyson Fury any time soon, but it is likely he will have the opportunity if he can defeat Usyk in 2022.
