Former world heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr has announced that he is eager to face Tyson Fury in the near future. The ‘Gypsy King’ is widely expected to take on Anthony Joshua in a highly-anticipated unification fight later this year, but admitted earlier this week that negotiations may not be as close to completion as previously reported.
The winner of the proposed all-British bout would become the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999, with all the marbles currently shared between Fury and Joshua.
However, in the event that a last-minute hitch throws the fight into doubt, Ruiz has suggested that he is more than ready to take a shot at regaining his status at the top of the pile.
The Mexican contender sensationally claimed all three of Joshua’s belts in 2019 when he handed the Watford-born fighter his first professional defeat, knocking him to the canvas on a number of occasions before the bout was eventually stopped in the seventh round.
Joshua promptly avenged his only loss six months later to reclaim his lost titles, with Ruiz having failed to return to the ring since.
However, he has confirmed that another world title fight is on his to-do list, claiming that he would like to face Fury with the aim of taking the undefeated Brit’s WBC strap.

He also suggested that he could take on Deontay Wilder in order to assert himself as the rightful challenger to Fury’s crown.
“Of course, everybody is talking about that fight. I would love to fight Wilder and Tyson Fury,” Ruiz told Little Giant Boxing.
“I want that green belt. I have all the belts but that belt, I’m missing that one. I know Anthony Joshua is going to fight Tyson Fury but I need that belt, baby.”
The WBC championship is the only heavyweight title that Ruiz has not held during his professional career.
He is scheduled to make his comeback in April against fringe hopeful Chris Arreola after preparing for the best part of a year under new coach Eddy Reynoso, who also trains pound-for-pound king Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
Ruiz explained that he is aiming to become the best version of himself under the watchful eye of Reynoso, after initially losing his determination and desire to win upon becoming world champion two years ago.
“That’s exactly why I’m here [with Reynoso],” added Ruiz. “I actually messaged him [Canelo] and told him after I lost to Anthony Joshua, I told him that I want to make a difference and make a change.
“I told him that if he could bring me here where he’s at. So I’m under his wing, me and him and working together.
“Like I said, working with a lot of different champions, it’s a different mentality. I’m just excited, man. I’m excited to be giving the fans what they wanted.
“I’ve never been 100% until now, so I can’t wait. I’m going to be the best version. There are still improvements to come. We can’t stop learning in this boxing game, and that’s why they call it ‘The Sweet Science’.
“The main thing is to keep working. After Arreola I want to keep fighting and keep training to look better and better.”
