Team GB hopeful Johnson-Thompson trains in full PPE ahead of Tokyo Olympics

Golden girl Katarina Johnson-Thompson is taking no chances as she bids to be fit in time for the Tokyo Olympics.

With less than four months until the Games start in Japan, Britain’s world champion heptathlete is back in training following a serious Achilles injury.

And she has posted a picture on Instagram of herself ‘training’ in the gym wearing full PPE, with the caption: “Catching weights not COVID”!

The extent of Johnson-Thompson’s injury remains a closely guarded secret and has led arch-rival Nafi Thiam to be installed as favourite to retain her Olympic title.

Thiam, beaten into second place by the Liverpudlian at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, proved her fitness and form with pentathlon victory in the European Indoors earlier this month.

Johnson-Thompson said: ”I'm gutted that it's not the way I wanted to start a new year, but I'm remaining positive and I'm in a good place right now.

"I'm progressing really fast and I'm happy that all things are set in place for the outdoor season."

The 28-year-old insists she is fully focused on Tokyo having initially been hit for six by the decision to postpone the Games for a year due to the pandemic.

"When it got announced it was like my whole motivation and energy to get up and do what I normally do each day started to fade away week by week," she said.

"It hit me the hardest because my dreams of Tokyo 2020 went in the bin. But my recovery is going really well.”
