Conor McGregor admits ‘cheating’ during trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier

Conor McGregor has admitted to 'cheating' during his trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier back at UFC 264 in July of this year.

The Irish fighter was beaten by his opponent as they met for the third time, losing via a technical knockout following a doctor stoppage as McGregor broke his leg in the first round.

McGregor, who is back in training, has now admitted that he put his fingers into Poirier's gloves while the pair were wrestling during the bout, in violation of UFC rules.

Following the fight, Poirier had accused McGregor of cheating by pulling him into upkicks on the floor while having his gloves held.

Speaking on Twitter, McGregor said: "Can see the weight in those upkicks he was eating here as well. Which weren’t even the two heaviest upkicks I landed.

"Where was he going from open guard top here? He doesn't like upkicks through the face? Elbows down through the crown? You don't like it? Tough s***, see ya soon."

When a fan then replied: "When you grabbed onto his glove? Ye", McGregor confirmed that he had bent the rules during the fight.

"That’s right, I’m truly nasty in there. He hooked the fence. I grabbed the glove. A fight is a fight. Only b****** complain," replied the former double world champion.

The upkicks that McGregor was speaking about are illegal when the opponent is on the floor, which Poirier was during the early stages of the fight.

Following the bout, Poirier commented on this as he said: "That's why I let him up at the end of the round. I let him up because he had three fingers in my glove. It's a good grip on the cuff of the tape. Pulling me down into upkicks.

"He's pulling me and kicking up at the same time. You know, I'm not surprised that he does stuff like that. I was telling Herb that 'I can't get out of it.' When I told Herb, maybe Conor pulled his fingers out."

Poirier's reward for beating McGregor is a shot at the lightweight world title against current champion Charles Oliveira in December this year.

Meanwhile, McGregor has a host of potential opponents available to him if he returns to the ring to attempt to respond to his second consecutive loss.

The 33-year-old has two fights remaining on his current UFC deal and, according to reports, could complete another trilogy with a third meeting with Nate Diaz in 2022.
