The second seed, who accepted a wildcard to enter the event, broke to love in the opening game to set the tone for a dominant opening set.

She continually pinned her Chinese opponent behind the baseline with her power, winning 64 per cent of the points to claim the set in just over half an hour.

Wang, the world No. 51, lifted her intensity in the opening stages of the second, with the duo trading service breaks through the first four games before Muguruza upped the ante to hold to love in the fifth, immediately break and then stave off a break point in her next service game to skip clear 5-2.

Despite staring down the barrel Wang refused to wilt, digging deep to break back in the ninth game when Muguruza was serving for the match to eventually square proceedings at 5-5.

However the former world No. 1 recovered her composure to end Wang’s resistance on her first match point.

“It was a tough match at the end, I think she played much better [in the second set], serving better and coming with better shots,” Muguruza said.

“It is always windy here so all the matches tend to get equal, especially at the final moments.

“But I am happy with my performance, I am excited to be back here after six years … I just want to play more matches.”

Another former champion Alize Cornet also progressed into the second round after outlasting Alison Van Uytvanck in three sets.

The Frenchwoman, who saluted in 2016, triumphed 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 in a two hour slugfest, joining qualifier Ons Jabeur and fourth seed Shuai Zhang as other day two victors.

Jabeur brushed aside Anna Blinkova 6-4, 6-1 while Zhang bounced back from dropping the first set against Hobart regular Kirsten Flipkens to emerge with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win.
