Holger Rune’s mum and manager Aneke has clarified what went on between her son and Stan Wawrinka, after they appeared to clash in Tuesday’s Paris Masters. Rune secured victory in the French capital, as he defeated Wawrinka 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 to book a spot in the round of 32.

The pair played out a heated clash, with Rune battling back to save three set-points on his way to his victory. Following the clash the two players shook hands at the net, but Wawrinka didn’t hold back and criticised the 19-year-old’s attitude on the court.

As the pair embraced, the Swiss star was heard telling Rune: “My advice to you is that you stop acting like a baby, on court.” Following the controversy, the teenager’s mother and manager addressed the clash and was surprised by Wawrinka’s comments.

Post-match, she said: “It is hard to imagine that a sportsman like Stan would have said that. Then he would come across as an uncommonly bad loser. Holger has only mentioned that he wished him well with the results of the past weeks.”

This is not the first time Rune’s on-court etiquette has been questioned across his short ATP Tour career. Just last week, the 19-year-old was involved in a clash with a match umpire during his Swiss Indoors final defeat to Felix Auger Aliassime.

During the match a change to an advertising board put Rune off, leading to the Danish star calling for the point to be cancelled. This was soon dismissed by the umpire, who went on to award the point to Auger Aliassime.

Angered by the decision Rune lost his nerve and shouted at the umpire: “You must be kidding me?” Still unhappy, at the changeover, he went on: “You make such a huge mistake in such a phase of the final and you’re even too proud to look at me now? You behave like a king!”
