British No 2 Dan Evans given free passage through to the third round of the Australian Open after Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech withdrew with a wrist injury

  • However, it was later revealed that he was suffering from a wrist injury 
  • Evans is now through to the last 32 in Melbourne for the first time since 2017

Dan Evans was given a free passage through to the third round of the Australian Open when his opponent Arthur Rinderknech withdrew.

Evans had been due to take on the Frenchman at Melbourne Park on Thursday but received a walkover prior to the start of play.

No immediate reason was given for Rinderknech’s withdrawal from the competition, but it was later confirmed that he was suffering from a wrist injury.

Rinderknech’s withdrawal means Evans is through to the last 32 in Melbourne for the first time since 2017 – when he made the fourth round at a grand slam for the first time.

Evan will now face either ninth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada or Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the third round on Saturday.

The 31-year-old will look to build on his previous performance – having dismantled former world No 7 David Goffin in the first round. 

The British No. 2 – who lost in the first round in 2021 – cruised past Goffin, winning 6-4 6-3 6-0.

Meanwhile, Emma Raducanu and Andy Murray take to the court on day four of the 2022 Australian Open on Thursday.  

Raducanu will face world No 98 Danka Kovinic in the second round after beating Sloane Stephens 6-0, 2-6, 6-1. 

Meanwhile, Murray defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili in five sets 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, 6-7 (7-5), 6-4 to reach the second round of the competition.
