Ash Barty knocked out of WTA Charleston Open in huge upset

Aussie Ash Barty’s winning streak is over after she was ambushed by Spain’s Paula Badosa at the Charleston Open on Saturday morning.

The world No. 1 was knocked over in straight sets 6-4 6-3 in the quarter-finals in a slightly concerning result ahead of the 2021 clay court season, where she will have to defend her French Open crown to retain the No. 1 ranking.

Barty had won eight straight matches since returning to the WTA Tour last month, including an impressive tournament victory at the Miami Open.

However, she came unstuck on Saturday when she failed to take her opportunities against Badosa.

The 24-year-old converted just two of her 14 break point opportunities, while Badosa broke her five times from 10 opportunities.

The pair had never met before and Barty appeared unable to settle into the match.

It is very close to the biggest win of Badosa’s career with the world No. 71 now through to a semi-final against either Sloane Stephens or Veronika Kudermetova, who play later on Saturday afternoon (AEST).

Earlier on Saturday, No. 12 seed Ons Jabeur and unseeded Danka Kovinic won through to the semi-finals with impressive victories.

Jabeur was impressive in her 6-3 6-3 win over Coco Gauff while the American teenager hit a crazy 13 double faults.

It leaves the door wide open for Jabeaur to take out her first WTA tour title.
