World Cup fever at all-time low as just 8% of England fans plan to watch at pub

Less than one in 10 England fans are planning to watch the World Cup in the pub, according to statistics.

The world's first winter World Cup is just around the corner though excitement for it is at an all-time low. Beer gardens across the country filled to the brim with tipsy, topless fans is a staple of the English tournament experience, but it sounds like things will be different this year.

A survey of more than 4,400 Brits found that just 29% of respondents were planning to watch the World Cup – just over a year after more than half the population tuned in to watch England in the European Championship final.

It also found that 84% of those planning to watch the tournament were going to do so from home, with just 8% saying they were going to head for the pub for the games. Some blamed the cold weather for their decision, though others cited the cost of living crisis.

The last time England fans had to watch the World Cup under cover of darkness was in 1994 when the USA staged the tournament – but at least back then it was warm enough to sit outside.

Later this month fans will have to choose between comfort and atmosphere, and between an extra pint and an extra Christmas present. Good job, FIFA.

Gareth Southgate's side kick off their campaign against Iran on November 21, just over a week after the Premier League season halts, before going on to face the USA and Wales later in the month for a place in the knockout stage.

Despite the Three Lions reaching the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, finishing runner-up in the Euros last summer, and being one of the tournament favourites in Qatar, excitement, shamefully, isn't all that palpable.

Here's hoping something changes in the coming weeks, but with temperatures dropping and the need to save increasing, that seems unlikely.
