The football world has reacted in astonishment to Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson’s stunning stoppage time headed winner against West Brom.

Liverpool were moments away from suffering a severe dent in their bid to reach next season’s Champions League, as they were being held to a 1-1 draw by the Baggies.

It looked like a risk when goalkeeper Alisson decided to step up in stoppage time as Liverpool had a late corner to try and find a late goal.

Alisson scored a shocking late winner for Liverpool in a dramatic victory over West Brom

The football world has reacted in astonishment to the dramatic way Liverpool secured a win

Perhaps West Brom didn’t expect him to cause any threat as the ball came in as they left him unmarked but the Brazilian hit a perfect header into the top corner.

It makes Alisson the sixth goalkeeper in Premier League history to score a goal and the first to net a winner.

The result gives them a boost in their pursuit of the top-four also as they sit one point off Chelsea, with the Blues set to play third placed Leicester before Liverpool travel to Burnley on Wednesday.

Alisson’s teammate Virgil van Dijk took to Twitter posting a video of the goalkeeper singing ‘Allez, allez, allez’ chant during their Champions League trophy parade in 2019.

Trent Alexander-Arnold added that he had ‘never seen anything like that’ while injured captain Jordan Henderson said ‘What a header! We never give up. Well done boys.’

Several former players turned television pundits also gave their reaction to the stunning goal.

Alisson dedicated the goal after the match to his father who died suddenly in February

BBC and BT Sports presenter Gary Lineker tweeted: ‘Crikey! I’ve seen it all now. A last second winner from @LFC’s keeper. Alisson wonderland.’

Former Manchester City defender and Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards added: ‘Alisson Becker! Just incredible wow!!’

Michael Owen who scored 188 goals for the Reds between 1997 and 2004 tweeted: ‘Absolutely incredible. No other words for it.’

Wycombe striker and Liverpool fan Adebayo Akinfenwa joked: ‘I just clocked me & Alisson have scored the same amount of goals this season.’

His goal means Liverpool now sit just one point off the top four with two games to play

It has been an emotional year for the Liverpool goalkeeper after his father died in February.

During his post-match interview, the Brazilian told Sky Sports: ‘I’m too emotional after the last few months with everything that happened with my family.

‘But football is my life, I played as long as I remember with my father.  I hope he was here to see it, but I am sure he is with god on his side and he is celebrating.’

Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish said that he was ‘fantastically happy’ for the Brazilian after his goal.

He tweeted: ‘Cannot believe anyone in the world could be anything other than emotional about Becker scoring the winner today after the personal trauma he has had this year. @Alissonbecker I am fantastically happy for you!

‘West Brom striker Hal Robson-Kanu gave the Baggies the lead after 15 minutes before Mo Salah equalised after 33 minutes.

Jurgen Klopp’s side struggled to find a winner and if they were held to a draw, it would have been out of their hands to finish in the top-four.

But Alisson’s 95th minute winner puts them in good position with two games left against Burnley and Crystal Palace.
