Tottenham’s hopes of potentially appointing Julian Nagelsmann this summer may have suffered a blow after Bayern Munich reached out to RB Leipzig to discuss the 33-year-old boss, according to reports in Germany. The impressive German is a man in demand and currently sits at the top of Spurs’ managerial shortlist.

Daniel Levy is optimistic he can entice Nagelsmann into a move to north London but now he is facing stern competition.

Not only would it take a substantial fee to prise him away from Leipzig – believed to be between £13million and £17m – but Bayern have now made their move.

According to German journalist Manuel Bonke of Munich-based newspaper Tz, Bayern have initiated talks with Leipzig in a bid to close a deal for Nagelsmann.

The European champions are on the lookout for a new coach after Hansi Flick confirmed he would be stepping down at the end of the season.

Flick is set to take over the German national team, with Joachim Low set to part company with his country after the European Championships.

Nagelsmann was quick to deny reports earlier this month that Bayern were in talks with his representatives.

It’s understood that he is in fact open to taking the Spurs job, should the opportunity arise.

Bundesliga journalist and broadcasters Archie Rhind-Tutt reported on Friday that sources close to Nagelsmann had confirmed his interest in the position.

The former Hoffenheim boss follows Spurs closely from a fan sense and the source claimed the club are the “perfect match”.

Spurs do have a number of alternative options in mind though, knowing their pursuit of Nagelsmann is complicated.

Ajax’s Erik ten Hag fits the criteria that the Spurs hierarchy are looking for.

He plays possession-based attacking football and has a track record developing young players.

Nuno Espirito Santo is another manager that may fall under consideration.

His Wolves side lost 4-0 at home to Burnley on Sunday, sparking doubt as to whether he will be in charge next season.

It feels as if Nuno may have taken Wolves as far as he can and that the club may benefit from fresh ideas.

The appointment of Ryan Mason until the end of the season gives Levy plenty of time to make his decision on Jose Mourinho’s successor.
