Tottenham can play a helping hand in Chelsea’s pursuit of Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries. The Blues are reportedly set to go all in for the Netherlands star and a Spurs player could replace him at Inter.

New Chelsea owner Todd Boehly spent around £270million on new signings in his first window in charge in the summer. But there is no sign of the American slowing down in his attempts to build a successful squad at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are linked with a host of transfer targets ahead of the January window. And one of them is Inter star Dumfries, who would provide back-up and a different option to Reece James.

However, Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb claims a January deal for Dumfries is unlikely. Inter will do all they can to keep hold of the 26-year-old until the end of the season at least.

But the Serie A giants are preparing for his exit. The report says Tottenham star Emerson Royal is one of their top targets to replace Dumfries if he were to leave.

Spurs can therefore help out their London rivals Chelsea if they let Royal to move to the San Siro, as it would allow Dumfries to complete a move to the Blues. Inter would want no less than £34.5million (€40m) for Dumfries, who still has two-and-a-half years remaining on his contract.

Dumfries began his career in the Netherlands with Sparta Rotterdam and had spells at Heerenveen and PSV Eindhoven. He moved to Inter in 2021 for a fee of around £12.3m, so the Italian club would be in line to make a hefty profit.

Dumfries is a regular for his country and has started every match so far at the World Cup in Qatar. But Chelsea’s hopes of signing him may rest on whether Spurs let Royal leave.

The Brazilian has been the first-choice right wing-back for Antonio Conte this season. He has featured in all 12 of the Premier League matches he has been available for, missing the other three after being sent off in the north London derby defeat to Arsenal.

Spurs signed Djed Spence in the summer and many thought he would have featured more regularly at wing-back than he has. The former Nottingham Forest loanee has made just four substitute appearances in all competitions so far for his new club, with Matt Doherty playing back-up to Royal instead.
